Halloween Disco

Eunice Li 11A

The Halloween Disco is a spectacular annual fixture at CKY. It's also a huge event in the Challenge Week Fundraiser. Every year, IB students try their best to raise funds for people in need all over the world. This year, the Thailand and USA groups were responsible for organizing the disco.

As I was a member of the USA team, my group didn’t actually have to do fundraising since we were going to participate in the World Scholars Cup competition. However, we still volunteered to plan this major event because we were extremely enthusiastic about the idea of a disco… it was going to be amazing!

In preparation for the disco we had lots of meetings after school. We decided on a 'graveyard' theme which would match with Halloween, with the Haunted House (which was also fantastic). Afterwards some of us, along with Ms Richards, went to Sham Shui Po to buy decorations - we decorated the Drama room until 9pm the night before!

Even though it was a lot of hard work, in the end it was all worth it, as I saw both juniors and seniors enjoying themselves at the disco. For the juniors, we hung up a lot of balloons on the ceiling, each containing a 'trick' or a treat. One of the most memorable moments was witnessing a fake cockroach fall out of the balloon when it was burst - it was even funnier than we had imagined. For the seniors, everyone gathered in a great big circle and danced together. The highlight of the night was Ms Richards who dressed up as a fallen angel. Her costume and make up were gorgeous! She even danced with Mr Bell to Gangnam Style, which brought the atmosphere in the disco to a climax.

On behalf of the USA and Thailand groups, I would like to thank everyone who came to the disco. We were all extremely pleased with how fun and enjoyable the disco turned out. We hope even more of you will come next year and the years to come, since it’s great fun and the money received goes to good causes at home and abroad. I’m looking forward to next year's disco night already. Hoping to see you all then!

Haunted House

Jerry Li 11B

The Haunted House was created from scratch by our own IB students, and proved to be a major attraction in the Fundraiser. Coinciding with the Halloween festival, the Haunted House was themed around Circus and Clowns. A team led by Yuki Wong and Richard Tang, supervised by Ms Tai and Ms Gee, composed of students who would go on trips to Nepal and Dali, China, invaded the 6th Floor Lecture Theatre. An intricate plan was designed and the map of the room layout is shown below.

After days of hard work, including planning, altering and preparing the actual venue, eventually the Haunted House was completed, twisting and turning along frightful dark alleys all along the way. Open to all secondary levels, the Haunted House was one of the most popular events. On 31 October, the House of Scares opened for Year 6 to 8 from 6pm to 8pm, and from 8:30-10:30pm for Year 9 to 12. With admission tickets at only $50 each, an amazing $8,600 was raised for charity with the Haunted House!

Benjamin and I were fortunate enough to be a part of the team building the Haunted House, and we would just like to say that constructing and laying out the decorations was every bit as fun as the scaring itself; it was a pleasure to be amongst the people who put in amazing effort for the Haunted House. We hope that everyone had as much fun as us during that memorable night!

The last few weeks were an exciting time at CKY when students across all year levels came together to support good causes and show our care for those in need. Of the many fundraising activities that the Year 11 and 12 students held, the Thai food offered at the Café, rebranded Carers on the Hill for the week, and the Snack Bar were among the most popular, for obvious reasons why!

The Café and Snack Bar offered unique foods that we can’t normally buy, ranging from Thai noodles to snacks like potato chips. What’s more was that these were all served with a bright smile from our IB students. This combination really tells us that the best ways to offer help and support are often those who make people feel connected.

These treats were a great thing to have, and they meant so much more than simply something to fill our stomachs.

Dodgeball

Gordon Yung 11C

The Teacher-Student Dodgeball contest was one of the events that raised most of the funds needed for our Challenge Week trips. I was one of the lucky students involved in the competition. It was a great experience since I could throw dodgeballs at our teachers, which is always a good thing! We could also raise money at the same time which made it an even better event. During the matches students rented water guns to shoot at students who took part in the contest, which not only increased our funds but also brought much joy to the students watching the competition. As a participant, I thought this was a great way to raise funds and have fun at the same time, and I will definitely attend the next Fundraising Teacher-Student Dodgeball contest. Let’s look forward to next year's games!

Bake Sale

Nicola Chou 11A

With all the love and support from our fellow students, the CAS Fundraiser Challenge of 2014 has come to an end. Many events took place at our school campus in the past few weeks to raise funds for helping those in need of our care, at home and overseas.

Who could resist eating the yummy brownies and cupcakes, or the Thai cup noodles for lunch? The Bake Sale caused quite a stir during the fundraising weeks.  Along with the Café, the Bake Sale offered a selection of tasty sweets and savory treats. While we all may have put on a few pounds in weight over the two weeks, it was all for a good cause, and helped us to raise over HK$100,000 to support our partner charities in Hong Kong and overseas.  Thanks for all your support and see you at next year’s Fundraiser Challenge!
