Inter-school Athletics Competition

Charlotte Tang 8A

“Bang!” I took off running, focusing on the finish line in the distance. From both sides, rivals closed in, heaving, charging forward. My feet thumped heavily on the moist ground, my legs already sluggish and weary. Rounding the curve, competitors accelerated for the last section of the race; however, I was steadily slowing down. “Go! Not more left! Just a few more steps! You’re doing well!” My teammates’ cheers rose from the crowd, and with one last burst of energy, I lunged at the finish line, completing the race.

“Well done, good job!” Classmates congratulated me as I climbed up the stairs to the spectator stands. I mumbled ‘Thank you’ in response, still dazed by the event. But I was soon occupied with the relay event. Although less pressured, I was nervous about violating the rules. In the end, everything went smoothly; the baton was passed on smoothly and we were all able to meet our standards.

The competition not only provided a suitable environment for athletes to compete and improve their skills, but also enhanced the bond between our teammates. During the events, we chatted freely with classmates we were unfamiliar with, and because everyone was aiming for the same goal, we were all very supportive and reassuring to any teammates in need. At school, generally we stay within our circle of friends from the same class or grade, but through the practices and the actual competition, I’ve widened my social circles and grown to know students from different year levels.

I really enjoyed the Inter-school Athletics Competition this year. In the previous years I’ve focused too much on winning and missed out on even more precious things, like sportsmanship and attitude. Although I have been slightly more relaxed this year, my experiences were much more rewarding. This event has enhanced my perseverance, cooperation and communication skills. Despite of the large amounts of time and effort I put in, in the end it was truly worth it. Even though the competition only lasted for three days, it has relit my enthusiasm towards athletics. I may not be as fortunate next time, but I look forward to next year’s competition, and I hope I can experience the same level of enthusiasm and spirit again.
