Sports Day at CKY is always an enjoyable event for teachers and students as it gives us the opportunity to chill out and take a break from the stress at school. Throughout the whole event, the house cheerleading competition was the most memorable for me. We didn’t only enjoy watching other houses’ performance but were also able to learn from them. All of us put full effort into it, and we sacrificed our recesses and after school periods for practices, which made the competition more precious. As I recall, the week before sports day was very crucial to all houses’ cheerleaders. We stayed after school until six every day and left school exhausted yet satisfied.

On Sports Day, all four houses exhibited their house spirit in track and field events, as well as the cheerleading competition. Many of us cheered as we watched our house members competing with other houses’ students on track events. Handel won the overall championship for Sports Day this year, and Beethoven the cheerleading competition. The cheerleading competition was usually the last event of Sports Day, after all track and field events. Although all four houses performed splendidly, there was only one place for championship and it was quite obvious that it again went to Beethoven.

As a cheerleader of Mozart, although we didn’t win first place for cheerleading, the experience was priceless for us. We met other students from Mozart and got to know students we were unfamiliar with. Through working together towards the same goal, we found new friends with similar interests - this is one reason why I enjoy participating in school activities in most instances.

I also found the process much more precious than the result of competition. For me, the thrill of winning (and conversely the disappointment from losing) would be short-lived. It was merely a judgment on who was performing better, which does not necessarily indicate who put more effort into it, and sometimes it could be very subjective.

More importantly, the cheerleading practices and performances required lots of skills like co-operation, team spirit, mutual trust, endurance, willingness to sacrifice and more. These lively moral lessons last more than a few hours, unlike the happiness from winning the first place; they would be treasured in our hearts and help us become better people as we grow up.

15th of January is the secondary Sports Day. For most of us, sports day is a fun school day. Students who love and enjoy sports can participate and compete in sport events; for students who do not love sports as much, they can watch the games, spend time with friends chatting, eating lots of food; and students who love dancing and teamwork can enjoy the best part of sports day- cheerleading.

I was never good at sports, but I still quite enjoyed it. This year, I participated in two events: 100 meters run and vortex. As I’m a Year Eight student, I have a slight advantage as I’m competing with the younger year levels. Although I did not win any  medals in both events that I signed up for, I was still satisfied with my performance. I was shocked yet excited when I knew I got into the C grade girls 100 meters finals. All other competitors were fast runners and I was really nervous that I would be the slowest one. Luckily, I did not place last but I think my first try was better than the finals.

The last event of Sports Day was the cheerleading competition - my favourite part of Sports Day. I like cheerleading because I love dancing and I want to contribute to my house. Although this is the 3rd year I participated in the cheerleading competition, I still found it enjoyable. It’s a great event to build team work and to make new friends. The few days before Sports Day, we stayed after school until really late  to practice our cheerleading routine, but I think the practices were worthwhile seeing how well we performed in the actual competition. To join cheerleading, you don’t necessarily need to be good at dancing, gymnastics or chanting. All you need is to be responsible and punctual. We learnt to be responsible and punctual through our cheerleading practices, and we also built strong bonds with students from different year levels. Therefore I strongly recommend everyone to join cheerleading for their house.

Sports Day is a great day to build our house spirit, and whether we won isn’t the most important consideration. More importantly, we should enjoy every moment and build stronger friendships with one another. This year was probably my best Sports Day experience so far. The weather was fantastic; it did not rain, it wasn’t too cold or hot and it was quite sunny. I had a lot of fun with people in my house. Although there was some room for improvement, I was quite satisfied with my performance on Sports day. I hope we can all keep up our interest in the upcoming Sports Day and hopefully do better in every sport event.

Sports day is one of the most exciting events in the school year because of its memorable events and activities, but cheerleading was the most exciting event of all.

The week before Sports Day, cheerleading squads from each house practiced every recess and every day after school. I also stayed behind a lot in order to get the perfect moves for our routine. The leaders, Mioie and Crystal, and the choreographers dedicated a lot of their time in designing the routine and chant. They also had to teach it to us, and we cheerleaders’ job was to perform it perfectly. Every time I finished cheerleading practice, I saw other houses’ cheerleading squads practicing really hard so I thought this year we might have a tough competition. Also, every day in class, everyone who was participating in the cheerleading squads was buzzing about how they did their chant, routine and how difficult they found it, so I felt it was not only a challenge for the leaders, but also for the cheerleaders as well.

On the day of the competition, we all concentrated on both our sports events and cheerleading. As for me, right after I finished my running event, I quickly rushed back to our practice area and kept on practicing, just like the other houses’ cheerleaders. Everyone was excited and nervous at the same time.

When the competition came, whenever a house finished their cheerleading, we cheered and clapped to show good sportsmanship. It was also because we genuinely felt their performance was really good. Beethoven was to go last, and I was even more nervous because other cheerleading routines were really good. But I was impressed of how we performed; we followed the routine as we practiced, we did the moves on the right beats and we didn’t fail on the stunts. To me, it was amazing, although there might be minor accidents during our performance, I was still really proud of our performance.

In the end, our house won the championship for cheerleading, B grade and participation. This was the first year for Beethoven to win so many prizes and we were all proud of ourselves. I think other houses did really good too as they also won a lot of awards! But most importantly during the sports day, I learnt more about team work and that any goals can be achieved if we work together!
