ENGLISH

CKY students are high achievers in many subjects and English is no exception. Students at CKY participate in competitions and other activities to enrich and further their skills in the English language.

One such field that CKY has been improving on every year is that of debate. The English debate team has done well in the debate competitions thus far this year. A team consisting of Ada Kam(9A), Cherry Law (9C) and Maggie Tsui (12D) won the preliminary round of the 31st Sing Tao Inter-School Debating Competition against St. Francis Xavier’s College on the issue of gender segregation on MTRs. The CKY English debate team is now through to the next round in February. In yet another competition, an all junior team consisting of Rachel Law(6E), Bryan Ho (6A) and Katrina Ng (6D) beat HHCKLA Buddhist Leung Chik Wai College in the second round of the Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition (HKSSDC) when debating on gender equalities in Hong Kong. The English debate team has been doing very well and we await further good news as the year progresses.

Also, this year our students have been particularly successful in the annual Speech Festival, with many of our students returning from the competition as champions or first runners up.  We have expanded the categories that our students have been entered for to include the public speaking and the Shakespeare monologues as well as continuing with the duologues and poetry recitals.  Everyone who entered the competition should be proud of themselves.

In other news, CKY has its own published writer. You may be speculating as to who this is. Is it a teacher? No. Is it one of the senior students? No. It is in fact a year 6 student, Rachel Law of 6E.  In previous years, Rachel managed to win a medal for high distinction in the ICAS and followed up this success with her book ‘The Enchanted Rose’. The story is about Rose, a young girl who has just started at the Fairytale College. The young protagonist not only has to deal with all the trials and tribulations that come with starting at a new school but also that of the magical landscape in which the book is set. The book can be found in the library and is also available on Amazon for all you avid readers out there.
