CKY House Musings

House Competitions are one of the things many students look forward to every year. For many it is an opportunity to shine outside of the classroom and to really be part of something bigger than themselves. The year 6 students in particular have shown great enthusiasm and this year is no exception.

Dodgeball kicked off the proceedings as it does every year. Current champions Beethoven have got off to a good start by coming joint first with last year’s runners up, Tchaikovsky. Handel were not far behind in third whilst Mozart just fell short in fourth.

The Junior Quiz has become a firm favourite fixture in the house events calendar in recent years. The charismatic Mr. Nicolson once again provided the wit and acid tongue that rivals that of even Simon Cowell. Beethoven narrowly edged out Tchaikovsky to first place in a very tight finish. Mozart managed to bear Handel to the punch and clinch third.

Happening at the same time as the Junior Quiz was the exciting Senior Volleyball competition. Traditionally Handel have been dominant in this event and this year was to prove the same, with Handel winning all their games. Beethoven came in second with Tchaikovsky just snatching third from Mozart.

Christmas Presentation is always one of the crowd favourites. The skits that each house offer every year shows creativity and the thespian skills of the CKY students. This year’s house offerings were spectacular as always with colourful props and costumes. Champions Beethoven were dethroned as the masters of Christmas presentation with Handel coming out on top. Beethoven still mustered a respectable second place followed by a valiant effort by Mozart with Tchaikovsky trailing behind.

In January, one of the biggest events of the year on the House and school calendar took place in the form of sports day. On a surprisingly hot day in January, each house battled it out in the many track and field events at Shum Shui Po Sports Ground ending with the annual grande finale of cheerleading. The standard of competition this year has risen once again with new records set and even more spectacular routines in the cheerleading section of the day. Every House represented and won something from the competition. Mozart came out on top with participation, Handel took the A grade cup, Beethoven the B grade cup and Tchaikovsky with the C grade. The phenomenal cheerleading performances were hard to call for the judges with Tchaikovsky marginally coming out on top in the end. The biggest upset of the day however came with the overall sports day prize. Handel’s dominance of sports day was shattered with Beethoven being declared new sports day champions. The all blue shield now has a hint of green on it.

The last event of the first term was the senior debate. In the preliminary round the motion for the debates was: motion: this house believes that children should have a legal obligation towards their parents upon adulthood. Handel on the proposition would face off against Beethoven on opposition whereas Mozart on the positive side were matched with Tchaikovsky on negative side. After a week’s worth of prepping and a hard fought debate the winners were Beethoven and Tchaikovsky who would face each other in the final with Mozart and Handel vying for third place. The motion for the final was ‘this house would abandon prisons’ and the tams were given about a week and a half to prep. In the match up for 3rd place, Handel were disqualified for only being able to field a one man team, 12C’s Ivan Chan. Mozart won by default taking 3rd place. However Ivan Chan persevered and decided to debate anyway since it people prepared and actually won. In the big match up between Tchaikovsky on proposition and Beethoven on opposition, the debate was really close. The adjudicators, Mr. Nicolson, Primary’s Mr. Mussell and guest adjudicator Mr. Paul Lau were embroiled in the deliberation for around 20 minutes before Miss Jennifer Chung pressed the judges for a decision. In the end Tchaikovsky came out victorious for the 2015/16 senior debates.

The current standings are:

1st Beethoven:            41

2nd Tchakovsky:        35

3rd Handel:                 32

4th Mozart:                 24

I am very pleased with the start Beethoven have made this year. Much like last year, we have hit the ground running. We have new leaders and new ideas with whom and which I am sure will help us build on the success of last year. The year 6’s bring new enthusiasm and new talent. I am looking forward to how the rest of the year unfolds and the challenges that we face as defending champions.

The brand new year 6 cohort has been a welcome addition to the Tchaikovsky family. They bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the house and all the events. Tchaikovsky is fighting as hard as ever this year. The captains have been working hard to organize and energize the house members. It is still too early to tell the result, but this will be another good year for Tchaikovsky.

Cheers!

Mr. Barnabas Lai

Head of Tchaikovsky House

With the most talented students in CKY, Handel will be dominating the house events in this year. Everyone of us will be pushing our limits to excel by participating in all the activities with sportsmanship and joy. We are glad to see that every member is contributing to make our dream comes true.

Let's fight for our legend and write our history in CKY, Handel!

Mozart house has begun the year with a huge amount of hope and expectation as usual. It is particularly exciting for our new Year 6s coming into the house. We are so pleased to see the enthusiasm and energy they bring to our meetings and events.

We have coped with the events so far in the first term, but watch out Beethoven, Handel and Tchaikovsky, the events in which we are particularly good at are coming up!

Good luck Mozart!

Mr. Steve Chan

Head of Mozart House
